Ayrshire Film Festival 2026
The annual Ayrshire Film Festival and Awards Ceremony takes place May 22nd 2026 at the Astoria Cinema, Burns Statue Square, Ayr; celebrating short films, documentaries and productions by Media, Film & Broadcasting Students at Ayrshire College.This year sees the first Digital Storytelling & Podcast Production Awards being added to the line up with Linda Corbett, Darcie Hamilton, Gregor Todd & Nicole Gottselig as our special guest Judges for the inaugural award, with Bronze, Silver, Gold and the coveted Platinum awards up for grabs.The aim of this award is to celebrate and acknowledge student success in digital storytelling & podcast production from across academic year 2025 – 2026.Ayrshire College has a rich, innovative, pioneering and award-winning legacy in podcasting having released 776 individual episodes (and counting) across 6 individually branded shows, with students working individually, collaboratively and creatively across all levels of their studies at Ayrshire College.All work is released on Spotify upon completion, approval & release agreement and is available on Spotify, YouTube and other streaming platforms, with a Spotify playlist created specifically for the 2026 Film Festival!Good luck to all our finalists!**

John McBlain is an award-winning producer and educator with a distinguished career spanning audio journalism, podcast and digital media production, and further and higher education.A Grade 8 Pianist & Saxophonist, John is an accomplished musician and vocalist and former DJ with multiple residencies, having worked professionally in the music industry for over 20 years.With a natural talent and flair for design, languages and creativity, he has worked and travelled across the world and in 2022, fulfilled a life-long ambition of studying and learning how to speak Japanese at Dundee University.Renowned for his deep expertise, he excels in harnessing next-generation technologies to foster talent development in both creative and academic environments.Throughout his career, John has earned numerous accolades for his innovative contributions to entrepreneurship and production, complemented by several Scottish Parliamentary Motions raised and proposed by Members of the Scottish Parliament in recognition of his impact.His groundbreaking work has been highly commended by leading authorities, including the Auditor General for Scotland, Ayrshire Magazine, the College Development Network, Education Scotland, HALO Digital, Cyber & Innovation Centre, with extensive coverage in national press, radio, and television features.Through his strategic creativity and unwavering professionalism, he consistently delivers transformative results, empowering individuals and organisations to innovate and thrive in dynamic media landscapes.If you're ever in conversation with him, ask him about the lives he has live - some of the chapters will make an interesting book or podcast series one day!

Lochnorris Studios is a podcast series written, recorded, hosted & produced by pupils from Lochnorris Primary School in Cumnock, released in partnership with Jonsan Media & Ayrshire College.Working with Ayrshire College Lecturer, audio journalist and award-winning producer, John McBlain who brings years of experience, enthusiasm, and microphones; these young minds are set to explore the world of storytelling, communication and digital media.Throughout the project, learners will hone a range of skills, from scriptwriting & storytelling techniques, to recording voices & sound editing, to graphic design, marketing and much more.This immersive experience fosters teamwork and collaboration as our young people work together to create and release self-written, self-produced and engaging podcast episodes while developing critical thinking and meta skills as they make creative and executive decisions on all things involved in the production of the series!

South Ayrshire's Field of Heroes
South Ayrshire Field of Heroes is a powerful audio-visual, immersive arts exhibition project in association with Standing With Giants commemorating fallen heroes of the Second World War.Produced by John McBlain, it tells the personal stories of 120 local men and women from South Ayrshire who fell in the Second World War.The project. began in May 2025 to commemmorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, expanded to include Remembrance Sunday 2025 and has expanded to an annual event in partnership with the Commonwealth Graves Commission.
VE Day 80
The South Ayrshire Field of Heroes was a temporary art installation created by VE80 South Ayrshire to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The installation featured 120 silhouettes of military figures, each representing a local person from South Ayrshire who died in World War II, and was displayed in Ayr's Wellington Square in May 2025. The main exhibition took place in Wellington Square, Ayr, from May 1st to 10th, 2025.Produced by John McBlain, each silhouette was connected to the personal story of a fallen individual from the area. Visitors could scan a QR code on their phone to watch a short video about that person's service and sacrifice, with each story told in the first person.Alongside the first person stories, visitors could access the App to see photo galleries dedicated and related to each individual person whose story was told.Over 100 stories were recorded for this massive production, with John singlehandedly managing, coordinating and producing all aspects of audio and video content creation.The Field of Heroes was part of the larger VE80 South Ayrshire project, which included other events like a service of celebration, beacon lighting, community activities, and a schools competition.
